We met for the sixth time at the ISTA Science Institute in Austria. As otherwise, there was a rich scientific programme and a meeting with scientists and women scientists. We also found time to play games together - the participants invented four new organisms that were perfectly adapted to the conditions in which they lived. In the evening, we visited the monastery in Klosterneuburg.
The most successful participants of the STEB competition took part in a camp at the ISTA research institute in Klosterneuburg. Students from all corners of Slovakia visited the laboratories, listened to expert lectures and talked informally over coffee with the scientists about their lives and their path to science.
The fourth edition of the STEB camp took place at the ISTA in Klosterneuburg and was attended by the most successful students participating in the competition. In addition to the rich scientific programme, we also visited the gardens of the Klosterneuburg monastery. During the whole duration of the camp we also tried to discover the fate of the mysteriously disappeared biologist.
After a pandemic break, we managed to organize the IST camp again. It took place on 4-6 October and was attended by 26 of the most successful STEB students participating in the seminar during the last two years.
We visited different laboratories where we saw scientists at work, we had a close look at their model organisms as well as the state-of-the-art instruments that scientists use to collect data. We were guided through the laboratories by young scientists who enthusiastically answered all our questions and even allowed us to try out some of the equipment.
An important part of the programme was a coffee and cake session with the scientists, where the students had the opportunity to talk not only about the work of the different research groups at IST, but also about the studies of the individual young scientists and their way to IST.
17.8.2021 Ut: 14:00 Tomáš: Úvod do všeobecnej embryológie a organogenézy
19.8.2021 Št: 18:00 Jarka, Samo a hostia: Štúdium v zahraničí
The meeting was held at IST Austria. This time the winners also got STEB T-shirts!
This year's STEB was held simultaneously in Austria and the camp was attended by Slovak students as well as Austrian competitors.
In addition to interesting lectures, the IST scientists prepared for us a tour of several laboratories and we were able to have an informal chat with them over dinner in the courtyard of the institute. In addition, during the meeting itself, we also had a competition when we tried to plan a scientific study and convince the grant committee to support it.
The most successful researchers of the seminar participated in a training camp at IST Austria. We walked through all the buildings of the large and growing institute, visited some very interesting laboratories and attended lectures prepared for us by IST scientists. We also played an evolution game, tried to analyse the song and genetics of hummingbirds and spent a nice informal dinner with the young scientists.
